At the moment we’re not really clear on what the plot is all about, but the main gimmick is that there are eight different playable characters, each with their own special abilities, whose stories begin to merge as the game progresses. It’s a unique look that mixes retro and modern styles in a very pleasing manner, even if the gameplay is more rigidly old school. You wouldn’t guess to look at it, but it runs on Unreal Engine 4 and while it uses 2D sprites for character the ‘HD-2D’ art style looks fantastic with its mix of detailed 3D backdrops and modern special effects. Of course, it’s best to try the game for yourself first, so we suggest giving the pre-launch online tournament a go when it becomes a free download from 3pm this Friday, June 1.Īn old school Japanese role-playing game is not the easiest thing to get the gist of in a quick hands-on preview but as you’ll already know if you’ve played the free demo Octopath Traveler is something a bit special. We’d be upset if there wasn’t a classic mode, but if it really does strip everything down to the N64 basics we’re perfectly happy to embrace the other features as well. If you’re already rolling your eyes at all the unwanted extras we would emphasise that the gimmicks don’t seem to overwhelm the game in the same way they have in previous Mario Tennis games. Fill the meter up entirely and you get to use a special shot which is different for every character and can potentially destroy a racquet in one go, although it can be blocked and we actually found it quite hard to make good use of. There’s also a slow-mo ‘zone speed’ move, with both it and the zone shots running on an energy meter that has to be filled up by playing normal rallies or using a ‘trick shot’ move which allows you to jump horizontally across half the screen. Mario Tennis Aces – by the power of Grayskull! This in turn has to be blocked by the other player or their racquet will be damaged and potentially destroyed. But zone shots allow you to aim in first person mode (using motion controls if you want) by getting under an incoming shot with a star icon on it. The basic controls are the same as always, with the option to use topspin, slices, lobs, and all the other tricks of actual tennis. We only got to see a few stages but they were a mix of normal matches, mini-games (one using the new zone shot move to knock out a host of Piranha Plants), and a boss battle. In apparent homage to the old Game Boy Color game this features not just a story mode but one with role-playing elements where you can upgrade your character and their racquet. We weren’t allowed to play the classic mode (or the Wii Sports style ‘swing mode’), but we did get a go on normal multiplayer and the game’s extensive single-player. There are a lot of new gimmicks in this game too, but thankfully they’re a lot more tolerable than usual – and there’s a plain Jane classic mode where you don’t have to use them. ![]() The problem is that long-time developer Camelot keep adding extra features and gimmicks that transform it from a relatively realistic tennis game to the sporting equivalent of Mario Kart. ![]() Obtain Sturdy Pickaxe from a townsperson inside the Oresrush Weapon Shop and return to client. We’ve always said that Mario Tennis on the N64 is one of our favourite multiplayer games, but we almost wish it wasn’t because it leads to us getting very upset when a new sequel comes out and it’s never as good.
